The Kids Aren't Alright?? (Nah y'all just old)
Over the past few weeks, it seems that the SoundCloud underground has leaked into the ears of folks who really put an alarm for 5 in the morning just to listen to that Drake album. More specifically with the emergence of New Yorker xaviersobased, this dude and his circle have turned 24 year olds and even underground legends into out-of-touch oldheads. Sure, it's polarizing music, especially when you bring in folks like Nettspend and phreshboyswag, both artists who understandably (and deservedly) get flak for being white artists taking advantage of a non-white space. Those conversations are going to be had for as long as these kids are relevant and that's understandable - I don't got a say on any of that shit, other than that I know it's a very valid thing to talk about. Folks like Lil Mabu, Yeat, SuicideBoyz, Pouya all deserve so much more malice tbh because fuck man, the music here is so good lol
These kids are all talented - Especially xav, as I really think he's one of the most interesting artists on the planet right now - Fuck just the internet. The rocket-like trajectory he has taken over the past few years has been insane to witness and it seems that there's just no ceiling with him at the moment. His Stash Muzik EP from the month has some of his best ever work. As for Nettspend, god damn I haven't seen an artist spark conspiracy theories like this in a while. CIA-affiliated or not, this lil kid is making bangers on his fucking phone looking like Timmy Turner's friend Chester. He raps like the kid who keeps throwing paper balls from the back of the class, and he sounds like that too, but in the coolest manner possible. Real recognize real. Will these kids be the next force in rap like what the government wanted? Hell no, but they are really etching their names as some of the most important faces of one of the greatest eras of the underground in my opinion. Music good. That's all.

If you aren't already familiar with Glasgowian GG12, then you aren't a real billdifferen fan because I've mentioned this motherfucker multiple times, PLUS Mr nobell piece prize themselves even invited me to talk about the lad, so shame on you. Nah, I always talk about this dude for a reason and it's because of his versatility - Whether he's doing obnoxious hardstyle(this legit made me cry the first time I heard it - RIP Avicii man), Scottish makina, or Limerance-type-beat-ass songs, GG emits this ethereal aura that feels like his soul is trapped inside of an abandoned rave venue from the 90s. A few weeks ago, I saw one of these tracks on my SC feed and at first, it kinda pissed me off, as I did that instinctive scoffing that any big brain music person would do since the music is so engrossed in stupid ass EDM dubstep bro culture. That mopey, laboring WOMP WOMP WOMP ass beat drop is so silly and I just couldn't take it seriously. To be quite honest, I'm super disappointed in myself for not really talking about funk at all this year. I don't know - It's like so overwhelming at times, I feel like covering it properly from the gringo perspective is a truly impossible task. What I would like for this series to make me do is share more funk and stuff, but the real big plan is have huge pieces out about each city and scene. Like there's so much more than just Rio and Sao Paulo - There's BH, Juiz de Fora, Espirito Santo, and a lot of cities that people aren't aware of outside of Brazil. I want to put out each one individually because there's that much music that is noteworthy and the DJs/producers are abundant as well. Just wanted to give y'all a roadmap on what I wanted to do with funk because there's sadly nowhere else properly covering this shit. Just be patient with me and I can get y'all the shit this music scene deserves. Now onto some of my favorite tracks from September.

Going to try to keep this a running bit where I choose one account who posts insane music on SoundCloud, and there's no one better to start this off with, as this dude is one of the most overlooked producers on the planet. JoKeR is from Durban, South Africa and you can tell that from an instant with that gqom-heavy sound that he brings, however his interpretation is just so brooding and apocalyptic - It's like nothing I've ever heard before. Funnily enough, I found out about them because they followed me first on SoundCloud - I think because I had liked a song of theirs one time, but I didn't properly delve into them until after they had followed me and thank god I did that because holy shit what is going on here. On top of that gqom sound, he's also bringing in tinges of Jersey Club, House, and whatever other hellacious shit he wants to terrorize you with. Like listen to those Sexxy Red remixes - What the FUCK. I can only have that on like 10% volume before I blow a whole through my floor. Just so incredibly insane.
